AJMatthews wrote:Lacers the goat? Give me a break. The goat is either Roy or Paul Willey, period! Bill Crouch probably coming in 3rd. Dave Lommen (Dr Lomax) was also an absolute beast online.

Lacers was great alone in his mom's basement playing offline but when he had to play "for real" he wasn't so stellar. In the first VGA he was bounced in the elite 8 or sweet 16 (head to head online with a moderator) and in the 2nd VGA (or was it the 3rd?) he was demolished (5 or 6 strokes if memory serves) in the first "non-offline" game. I don't remember whether he was in the CNN/SI Links challenge (oflline rounds for seeding then top 64 played head to head) in 1999 or not, but I know for sure he didn't win (because I did lol).

Don't get me wrong, he was/is a great player but get him out of his lab and he was quite beatable. Yes, I knew him quite well.

--AJ

Me thinks you read that wrong AJ, I called Paul Willey the goat and was saying if he returned he would return as Paul Willey and not use a pseudonym. The rest was my opinion about Elwood being Lacers.

I knew George quite well as well having played many multiplayer rounds online and listening to his stories. He explained that his finals appearance disaster was due to the fact that Microsoft used 2k3 for the 1st time and all the computers had ME instead of win 98. But after having listened to all his stories of over clocking and having the ability to slow the swing meter, i believe most of us thought he had manipulated the game code to his advantage at home and couldn't do so in the public setting.
If memory serves me right he shot a very pedestrian -8 score in those finals.

I had a little different take on George. He was helpful to me a time or two, still using his Lacers 2001 breezy wind chart 1/2 strength.
In this scenario of lspn pro he was the best. His finals apperances were disappointing to say the least.
I think Bill Crouch won 1 and Scott Lewington won 1 .( please correct me if my memory is getting bad).
I recall Roy saying to me in a message or such that he had won some money, but did not make the final
4. Roy also mentioned that at that time he felt like he was in the top 30 or so. Roy certainly has to be
one of the all time bests.
So to me George was good for the game.
I recall Marty,Autosnap(Brian),Ricky and others.
Im rambling because im at work cloning a 2t to a 4 t but im ending up with my 4 t only being a 2 t.

Doug :)

I first met Paul and his wife at the practice rds up in northern FL for the VGA. What a great couple. I am still friends with both on Facebook and it isn't Paul. If I remember right George reset the game resolution down to 800 x 600 because that is what his was set at back at his house. I did catch Paul step counting on a couple of his putts which without a chart I don't know if he was doing it by memory or had a built in chart in his head.

nahhhhh she'll be right M, am enjoying reading where this thread has gone. Some good memories for many, and Elwood intrigues.......

my reasoning that it is Paul, is the fact that Paul quickly replied in the Condolence's Guestbook at our dear Bruce's memorial. I saw that Guestbook post by Paul and thought that he is still "in touch with" the game here by reading of the passing of Bruce.

way out there i know, but LOL..........

Pitch that was a good link. I really enjoyed the reading. But I think that was
a few years ahead of my time. And, by the way congrats on your great play this week.

Good news for me I found my old linksmembers pics on an old CD. Will list people I have later. But, I did find a pic of a Scott Elwood. Could this be Mr. Elwood on the boards?

Annika was the best elite player I have seen bar none.

Reading that globalnet thing I was surprised that I hadnt heard of so many of the names where there was a list of the leading contenders in events. Surprised also at what seemed to be relatively average scoring compared to what I expected and saw through 2000 and following years.

I think Anders must have stopped playing before I got going and although my memory is really bad I think Paul Willey was losing some interest and not scoring consistently well at all. Legend though he certainly was.

Agree on Annika.
AndersB started playing CS ... !! and stopped years later .. which looking at it today maybe was a fault. :)
(Some guys here think CS is sweet :) Go Astralis !)
He does occasionally install links and to play a funner with me.
He just own it imo ... allways solid.Never beaten him (neither :( ) , but super guy and a nice chat.
