Most of the world except for North America would default to interpreting it the same way as Australia there.
I've always thought it is so inconvenient and in fact annoying that different countries use different formats for dates, and especially how easily the DD-MM-YYYY and MM-DD-YYYY ones can accidentally be mixed up. It's set up to maximize risk of international misunderstandings, maybe even one day some high ranking officer or politician will slip up and cause a nuke war because of it or something... I always prefer formats where the month is represented by letters rather than numbers for this reason, makes it instantly obvious. Then again, I suppose that excludes countries that use different alphabets...
