Does your ip address change or do you have the same one all the time.

Brian.

depends. if you connect to an isp that maintains a dhcp server, you'll lease a dynamic ip address that is subject to changing. usually the arp cache of the dhcp server will remember the hardware id of the device you're leasing the ip address for, and even if you flush the address, it will usually give you the same address. even if you've not connected for awhile.

you can also usually purchase a static (sometimes called a 'sticky' address) address for an additional charge from your isp that remains the same. that comes in handy if you're maintaining a web server.

thanks for your quick response Terrell. Can you tell me how I can find my ip address?

I,ve tried find ip address on google and it gives me a different number everyday. In matchmaker if a connection fails people play direct connection and seem to know their ip address. Just wondering if there was an easy way to locate it.

thanks again,

Brian.

ah! my bad, i should have anticipated it was a match maker question.

the easiest way to find your ip address is start|run 'cmd', then type 'ipconfig' (no 's). however, if you're behind a router, that will show you the internal address the router is giving you (provided your router is also functioning as a dhcp server). to find your external address (the one the rest of the internet sees), you'll have to open your router's control panel, and check its status page.

T is absolutely correct, but another way is to click "Direct Connection" > "Create Game" your IP address will be shown in the text box, tell that to your opponent ( you can then back out from here) and join his game.

Or... just use this url: What Is My IP Address

Or... here is one a little less fancy: IP CHeck

Either one, run it the first time, then just bookmark it for furture reference.
