What's an STA file

Postby AZWilly on Sat May 19, 2007 6:31 am

was looking through stuff in hopes of speeding up my game, and found a file full of STA files. When i tried to delete them and play a game, my game wouldn't recognize that I had a course. Just curious, and thanks.

I think they're statistics files, either course or player or both.

thanks steve, that's what i thought, too, but I couldn't figure out why my game couldn't "see" a course without them.

I have never tried deleting them but if removing them renders a course as unrecognizable then I suspect that the game creates the sta file when you Install a new Course and removing it keeps the game from seeing it.

Try reinstalling the missing course again and see it is back usable and a if new sta file is created.

Have you done this?

Make sure you have only a few courses in your main courses folder. The rest of your courses should be copied into another folder and installed using the add courses menu inside the game and make sure you say "no" when it asks if you want to copy the course into the courses folder.

Thanks for the replies. I do have a separate folder created for courses, and that has helped speed the game a bit, but I guess I'm still not quite understanding, or I misstated. The "no-shows" came up when I tried to enter an arcade event. Just d/led a new course, and played a few practice holes on it in hopes it would also show up as an STA...no luck. Plus, it's not all of my courses. Some of the STA filed courses are in my game course folder, some in the newer course folder :?. Are these STA files only created when I play an arcade-type event? It's not a major file (1.87 mb), so I guess it's not a major deal, it's just got me wondering...if it's just a stat file, why does removing it also remove the game from play here?
Thanks again, all.

The STA files are statistic files from the courses (longest drive for the course, individual holes, etc.). Mine are stored in the hidden directory:
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Links 2003\Course Data"
I'm pretty sure that is where they belong, but not 100% certain. I also don't know if/how they may affect arcade events (I would suspect they wouldn't, but who knows). All of my STA files are 6300 to 6400 bytes, but I have one other file in that directory (Course.DAT), which is about 2,395,000 bytes).

I don't have any other STA files on my computer (that relate to Links). Try copying (or moving) all of the STA files to the directory I mentioned above and see if that helps/resolves things.

"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Links 2003\Course Data"

This is where all my .sta files are located. I did a search, and there are no .sta files anywhere else on my HD.

You nailed it guys. That is exactly the location. I'll just leave em there, don't want to try running an experiment again on "what happens when I remove them". Cat hasn't been the same since...
