new system 2003 v1.07 crashing on startup

Postby cooncat on Fri Mar 23, 2018 10:03 am

Just built a new system to replace my 9 yr old I7 Bloomfield system on which Links 2003 v1.07 runs fine (as it does on my 11 yr. old HP Pavilion 9500 laptop, and 13 yr. old Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop). The new system is thus:

ASROCK MB
Intel I7-6700 Skylake 3.4ghz CPU
Corsair 16GB Vengeance RAM
EVGA GeForce GTX1050 video card
WD 250 GB Boot SSD
WD 500 GB Data SSD
Lite-On 24X CD/DVD ODD
Windows 7 (64 bit)

I've read that some have had problems with Win7 64 bit, but that was working fine on my old system with an ATI video card. Since this one has the EVGA (Nvidia) GeForce GTX1050 card, I did apply the Nvidia patch, but to no avail.

When it crashes, I get the window which says :Links 2003 has stopped working. Under the details:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: LinksMMIII.EXE
Fault Module Name: Kernelbase.dll
Locale ID: 1033

What I've tried:

Re-installing Game
Running in XP SP 3 compatibility mode on one/all the *.EXE files (with and without Administrator priv.)
Ran Nvidia Links 2003 Final patch
Copied the Kernelbase.dll file from my working system to the 1033 folder on the new system

This is the LAST program I have to get running on the new system before I swap it out with the old system. I'm loathe to
swap out yet as I usually play in 4-5 online tournaments a week and play vs. a friend once a week, so I need to have this running. I've run out of ideas. Hoping someone else has come across this

Here is something for you to try.

If you get this error win Windows8/10 here's how to fix it

1. Go into the Windows 10, click the start button then start typing the word “programs”. Or go into control panel.
2. You should see an option for “Programs and Features” – click it to open it up
3. When the window opens, in the left menu, click on “Turn Windows Features on or off”
4. Scroll down until you see a folder labeled “Legacy Components” and expand it
5. Do you see an option for “DirectPlay”? Is it checked? If it’s not checked, check it and click Ok
6. Close those windows then try the game once more.

Unfortunately, there is no "Legacy Components" in my list in the Program & Features / Turn Features on/off. No Direct Play either. Thanks for the reply. I've contacted Nvidia, and they asked for some info, but I'm not sanguine about the prospects; but I'll send what they've requested anyway. Really a shame, as this is the last program I need to integrate on the new system before I switch it out for the old system.

Thanks,

Cooncat....i have questions
#1 when does the game crash?
#2 have you added the card to links video text file?
and lastly have you tried playing the game with the sound options set like this?

What I get is the small Links 2003 window which comes up on launch. Then the screen goes black and I see
at the bottom "Powered by Nvidia ...." (not sure if it mentions the correct card. I have not modified the
Videocard.TXT file ... not sure what would go in there and where.

I've not adjusted any sound options, since I never get that far. Shortly after the black screen which shows
the "powered by Nvidia ..." at the bottom, the black screen reduces to a black window and I get the
Links 2003 has stopped working error msg.

Sometimes when I launch, I get the window which prompts: Restart, Troubleshoot, Help. When I click on
RESTART, it does what I described above.

I got a response from Nvidia Support asking for some 'system info' information .. I'll be getting back to them
today. In the meantime, I've been playing on my old I7 Bloomfield Win7 64 bit system with ATI HD 4850 card
with no problem.

Thanks for your interest in my problem ...

Guess i should have read the subject a little closer  but i digress.

Since its a new system the 1st thing i would do is run dxdiag.exe to see if it shows any problems, while there when it is on the display tab make note of whats in parentheses at the end of the 3rd line (part of what would go in the videotxt file)

If no problems are shown there the 2nd thing i would do is limit my screen resolution to 1024 X 768, 75hz then try to fire the game up again.

On a side note... the game is installed in program files (x86)/ microsoft games right?

I ran dxdiag in both 32 bit and 64 bit modes and it shows no problems with the system. The 3rd line in the video is the chipset, and in this case its the GeForce GTX 1050 ... and that is showing on the one startup screen I get right before it crashes to "Links 2003 has stopped running" (Powered by Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 is at the bottom of the screen ... the same as "Powered by ATI HD 4850" is on my old desktop). It's running DirectX 11 btw.

I'm running at the same resolution that I run on my old desktop: 1680 x 1050 - 60 hz (native to the LG IPS 23" monitor) and 16 bit color (I'm partially color blind so makes no sense running in 32 bit color, as I can't see those anyway). I've never made it into the program to where I can change resolution. The only way I can change it is in the registry, and I'm not familiar with the "MODE" number for resolutions other than the one I'm running, which is the number "12".

I did not install it on my C: partition (which is a separate 250GB SSD and for the system/boot only). I installed it on my secondary 500GB SSD. This is a similar install which I have on my old desktop, and my laptops, and they all work fine.

Still hoping to hear back from Nvidia Support today .. sent them a SysInfo dump along with some other info .. we'll see if they come up with anything.

I'd curse all Nvidia graphics cards/chipsets, but there is a Nvidia GeForce 8000M chipset in my 10 yr old HP Pavilion 17" laptop, and Links 2003 runs fine on that (and its also running Windows 7 64 bit).

If Nvidia comes up with anything (and it works), I'll be sure to post it here, hopefully to save some others the same aggravation. Thanks for your input .. Cheers.

To change resolution just right click on your desktop then click on the screen resolution tab

Links don't care what harddrive it is installed on, but it does need to be in a x86 program file as it is a 32 bit program... to check that you would click on your start button then double click on the harddrive you installed it on and a list of all programs will appear

Okay .. yeah, that's for changing the desktop's resolution. I thought you were talking about the game's resolution, which over rides the desktop resolution. Thanks.

As for the folder its in, I don't think it has to be in a "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\" folder, as it isn't on any of my other 3 systems which work. In most cases, I've installed the game in (e.g.) E:\Links2003\ . I checked on this old desktop, and there are no Links 2003 files on the C:\ drive.

Thanks again ...

The games native resolution was 800 X 600 16bit. Resolution for all programs is controlled by where you set it via the desktop. You can't check where links is loaded on your "old" computer check where it is on the new one.

The game's native resolution is determined by the Registry entry "Display Mode", which is a number from 1-15, each matched to a certain resolution. I think "1" may be 800 x 600 (not positive). I do know that 1280 x 720 is "5", 1440 x 900 is "11" and 1680 x 1050 is "12". 14 is 1920 x 1080 (nominal HD screen res.). No matter what the desktop resolution is, when the game is launched, it will change it to what is in the registry.

The game is located in the same place on the new computer as it is on the old computer: E:\Links2003\ (on my laptops its in D:\Links2003).

The detailed error message I'm getting in the "Links has stopped working" frame points to a DLL being called by LinksMMIII.EXE, located in the "1033" folder (inside the main Links2003 folderr). Normally, that DLL isn't even in that folder, so I'm not sure the error message is valid.

I could shut down both computers, pull the ATI card out of the old system and put it in the new system and load the drivers for it, then try to run the program, but I'm going to hold off until I hear back from Nvidia.

Good luck with your problem cooncat, since your windows 7 64 bit evidently don't work like my windows 7 pro 64 bit , this is the last bit of advice i can offer you. Try running this patch

Lets recap as far as links is concerned:
1)you built a new computer
2) you installed links in a directory other than default (did you try to fire up the game at this point to see if it worked?)
3) you installed patches
4) you went into the registry (HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Links 2003\Display Settings)right clicked on mode and changed the value from 1 to 12
(HKey_Current_User\Software\E\Links2003\Display Settings)(since you put your own directory settings)
here is the complete list of values so you know.
15 - 1920 x 1200
14 - 1920 x 1080
13 - 1808 X 1008
12 - 1680 x 1050
11 - 1440 x 900
10 - 1366 x 768
9 - 1360 x 768
8 - 1280 x 960
7 - 1280 x 800
6 - 1280 x 768
5 - 1280 x 720
4 - 1600 x 1200
3 - 1280 x 1024
2 - 1024 x 768
1 - 800 x 600
5) copied a kernelbase.dll into the links 1033 folder that in my game only has a dwintl.dll in it which is only a microsoft error reporting application.
6) fired up the game and it crashes immediately giving you a LinksMMIII.exe error (LinksMMIII is the links launcher itself.)

Do i have the facts straight?

If the answer is yes then i think you should go into programs and features and delete links.
Reinstall letting links install the game in the directory it wants to see if the game will fire up, if it does add all the patches in their proper order(insure the game is version 1.07 then change your registry display setting, check that the game is functional again, then drag and drop it from one harddrive to the other if your worried about space. If it don't your copy of links is messed up.
I believe 1 of 2 things happened
1) links is trying to run as a 64 bit program which it can't
2) the display registry got screwed up changing things before links had a chance to run as v1.07
I also believe Nvidia will be of no help to you with this problem.

Once again good luck with it cooncat
