One on One Play

I used to be able to play directly against my brother-in-law. Now with shifting IP addresses and wireless networks, it's become almost impossible. I think we were going through the Zone and I think he had to allow my IP address through his firewall. Back then I didn't even have any firewall protection.
Is there a convenient way to do this anymore?
