I agree that the whole thread should be deleted, not just the initial post. But I feel that the mods are doing a good enough job as it is.

"Sarcasm can be a great tool in the right hands, but in the wrong, it can be a devastating weapon. "

I never meant to stir up a hornets nest in starting this thread. Bruce you are doing a good job. Please do not hand in your papers.

'cause sometimes the replies are pretty funny, Ernie. And the humor isn't always lost by deleting the original poster's message. So you get rid of the crap message which is nothing more than a lengthy list of web addresses and allow some clever and entertaining replies. Like this one.

Hey, it made me laugh.

But then, I'm easily amused. :D

guys. i liked ernie's style because sometimes ya just gotta take the bull by the horns. and i admire bruce's style. it's easy to see he's been at this awhile, and has the temperament to not go off half c o c k e d (just in case). but it seems this big, hairy, old dude once said 'you can please some of the people some of the time. you can please all the people some of the time. but you can't please all the people all the time'. moderating forums certainly applies. so it's our (this community) responsibility to understand it's a thankless job (commensurate with pay), and to support those who choose to undertake it. if ya got a beef (equals constructive criticism), use the pm.

Well I think your a fine moderator, the best we have ever had here. You treat everyone the same and not just your buddy's as is the case with most moderators. If people get into a heated discussion, you leave things go as long as they don't go all kaput. You never run around trying to prove what a big shot you are. If I never see another one of them it will be to soon. lol

Keep up the good work, and I for one am glad your here.

Bruce..........This was not about replacing, just helping.

Ya might be a tad too nice once in a blue moon, but even with long explanations, certain people (one that appears to be your campaign manager) take great exceptions to having something deleted.(not long ago, she was asking you to hand in the keys). Now she's making posters to put up on her wall.

As mods go, ya do a great job, but I've seen too many times, for far too long, a nasty spam stay here for what seems the lengh of what's her names membership here.

Every now and then Mark's right hand man could use a right hand man, doesn't mean that Mark needs to amputate his

hey who told about the poster?! that was s'posed to be a secret~
i think we have a good understanding.. i was learning, and she's a great teacher :)

with regard to spam being here too long, i agree - 1 minute is too long for that stuff. so until Mark deems necessary just get in the habit of posting me... either email or PM and i'll be here -toot sweet- i think the french say ;)

Was that a resume, I rest my case. Maybe he should talk to Mark himself, and bring him an apple. See if your looking for a job in management, you have to learn to be nice to the little people on the way up even if you have to pretend. I thought maybe my first post may have been a tad harsh, but apparently it was not harsh enough. lol I like it when people apply for a position in an open forum, it really gives people a chance to see what they may be getting. I Have seen this approach a few times here and there in my travels, but the success rate is usually nil or next to none. lol

And he is right, I am just a horrible person. And his first order of business when elected should be to toss me and any other trouble makers right out on there ear. lol

Fun thread I must say.

My expectations? You really need to raise your standards pard.

BruceBo wrote:whats the point of deleting JUST the offending link? in mind many follow up comments have been enjoyably humoress, or instructive or educational for additional reference as to solutions.

Regardless of the humoress or intrinsically instructive/educational value (lol) of the followup comments, the originating author and corresponding title of the thread remain intact, much as graffiti sprayed on the neighborhood fence long after a gang-banger has moved on to mark up another territory. Remove the "badge of honor" and eventually they'll grow tired of trying and move on.

Many of these spammers established their forum identities before the recently added sign-up verification process. One solution would be to have everyone required to verify their e-mail address prior to their next posting, or perhaps when the tour resets/starts for real, have everyone sign-up anew - and log the IP. Then, when one of these spammers posts, delete the message/thread and ban the IP. I realize this might be a little heavy-handed and marginally inconvenient, but it would certainly help to prevent any future incidents of young children inadvertently viewing pornography while looking over Dad's (or Grandpa's) shoulder when he browses the forum.

It's a shame you took my post to heart to the point of threatening your resignation (twice) in your reply. I've gotten out of the habit of apologizing for what I type, and this is no exception. Free will should dictate what you decide, not a little mindless jibber-jabber between me and Murray.

I had started this thread just to see if there was any possible way to get rid of horrible threads which have no need to be here. ( It was not my intention in any way to have a go at any moderator, or how they do their job within this forum. )

I never intended this thread to get out of hand. So if you anyone has nothing constructive to say on the matter, then please do not post.

Thank you.

Lastly. I have moderated on a few high profile forums, Steam forum and Elderscrolls forum. I know what I would do here, without the need to resort to asking the admin.

Sorry ...um...your name escapes me right now, but please point out to me what part, in my last post, could be misinterpreted as a resume. As for kicking you, you're Canadian, albeit from the East, but I won't hold it against you here.

Online application?? only the first line about throwing the hat in, the rest has just been to keep the flow going, something that seems to abruptly stop when you lift you fingers to the keyboard.

The application you are refering to was dealt with, by pm, to bruce, on more than one occasion

I would think that the forum version that Mark is using is 2.0.17 or maybe less. phpBB is notorious for security holes and the new version phpBB 2.0.22 ( released the 23rd December 2006 ) when updated would most likely clear things up and the spam would stop.

Links Corner runs the same software as here phpBB but I would bet knowing Andy as I do, they are running the latest version 2.0.22 and have no or very little spam to speak of. ( I am sure others that post there could tell us )

Mark is most likely busy with real life things or other parts of the site and has not had time to update. I am sure BruceBo could check the version as he should see if its up to date when he enters the control panel. Now I am sure our thread starter and Ernie being as experienced as they are know this already.

Thats about as constructive as I can be, don't ask me any hard questions though. lol

i dont disagree. i made the decision based on my free will to decide ;) but do you really believe that deleting the entire thread would help? from what i've been deleting (even before threads have had a reply) does not seem to slow their getting re-posted.

if i could do this, i would. thats not within my 'rights' as assigned. whatever it takes to get it to stop would be great in my book. believe me, i am as tired of seeing those titles as anyone. then i have to check in to verify it is what i think it is, before deleting it. its a pain~

well shame or not, i respect this board and what Mark is trying to do. if there are enough that would feel i'm not acting in a way intended for the role it would be the right thing to do. As for reacting to your post.. well sometimes there might be ALOT of support for an idea, but no one wants to be the one to say so. you did... i allowed for supporters of your view to step forward, and let them know, supporting your view was not considered a personal attack, only a view that would better serve this board. i would not be an obstacle to that happening.

so there's no need for apology! i dont expect one. i am confident enough in my duties to carry them out -till told otherwise or as stated, (repeating for those who missed it) have enough people in support of a replacement. i'm cool with mindless jabber~ its harmless. i'm all for peace and tranquility - we all know there's enough out there that isnt. and what ever is best for this board is ok by me.

no one has stepped on my toes (see height of horse in earlier reply) and i'm easy going enough to enjoy a good banter :D

RE: catherine... you're ok.. no worries!
RE: Crissy... how does my poster look? ;)

everyone.... if there is/are any posts still annoying enough (from spammers) to warrent deletion, even if it is follow up commentary after the initial thread has been wiped, please indicate it to me, and i'll do the deed - ipso-facto.. which is latin for ipso-facto

As I said in an earlier post. It does not matter what kind of filters you have on a site. There are ways around things if you know what to do.

Any basic knowledge of scripts can produce disruptive effects if you know what to do. I am sure Mark knows only to well the effective ways of as I would call it back-tracking, to find out whos posting what, then make sure they do not do it again. That is all.

Rant over.

Thanks all for being so understanding.

And Bruce....... ;)
