Origin of the Mulligan

Gentlemen:

``THE ORIGIN OF THE MULLIGAN``

The history starts in Canada around the 1920's. A foursome of golfers, residing in Montreal , played their regular golf game at the Country Club of Montreal,

located on the south shore In St-Lambert. One of them, the sole owner of an automobile.was driving the other three to the club.

In those days driving conditions were much different than today's, as you can all imagine.

This promenade to the Country Club was exceptionnally long and arduous. The culminating point of the voyage: the crossing of the St-Lawrence River via the Victoria Bridge . Originally conceived for railway traffic and horse-drawn buggeys, it was ill-adapted for automobile travels.

Upon their arrival at the club, the group had to dash to the first tee in order to establish the starting order.

The short delay between the trip and the ``drive`` was putting the driver at a disadvantage and little time to regain all his senses.

His first attempt was often reflected by his nervousness, and, rarely represented his standard of play.

Because he was the driver, and consequently, merited a special consideration and sympathy, the other members always gave him a seconf try.

Because his name was: David Mulligan the second try from the fist tee, rapidly became a ``MULLIGAN``
