Handycap tournies

Are handycap tournies coming back. It was real fun playing in them as it sort of put everyone on an even keel. More players had a chance to win against better players.

the lstr handicap events on the old tour were the most tweaked events on the entire site, yet still had problems that had nothing to do with players trying to work the system. most of the obvious scams had been long noted and zeroed out of the lstr scoring scenarios with just two exceptions.

the most egregious exception was in the two upper level difficulty levels and involved the fact that if you could manipulate your scores to average around even par (pretty easy at champ if you were any good), your handicap would be zero, and an even par 72 hole total would almost always win at champ or elite. there was a player who exploited this scoring hole in the system every week. if you deliberately play poorly to exploit the system, is it cheating? according to the original links tour rules any concious manipulation of the system constituted cheating.

the other problem with the lstrs was that very good players playing their first lstr event were not getting a realistic handicap in a timely manner, even though this was not a problem that had anything to do with the player. the computer would only catch up with their play after two rounds which was too late. the solution would have been to wait to assign a handicap in the first event for each player only after they had finished all 72 holes, and their score would then have been adjusted with that handicap number for that first event.

other than that, when the event scoring was working properly (and there were big problems the last two seasons) the old lstr format was pretty good and plenty of guys from way down the ranking list contended every week. lw

Honesty

Postby BillJr on Fri Jun 29, 2007 9:31 am

I believe that a large majority of players play for fun and the chance to win a tournie. Lets spend our energy with rules and regs that apply to them. If a player wants to work the system, so be it, they are in the minority. They know who they are and other players know who they are by looking at their stats. Lets get back to playing for fun and competition.
