thanks for your input ......[/quote]

Microsoft will be providing security for my Win7 for another 14 months. So that might be a minute Jack

According to Microsoft... "Microsoft will continue to support at least one Windows 10 Semi-Annual Channel until October 14, 2025." So should still be good for a few more years. By then I will probably have already built a new computer. (Assuming that the insane price of graphics cards has returned to earth!)

Hi JRT,

If your computer is only 2 years old you can probably enable TPM and Secure Boot in the motherboard’s BIOS. You may need to convert your hard drive from MBR to GPT and change your firmware mode from Legacy BIOS to UEFI. (There are plenty of articles on the web showing you how to do all of this.) As others have said, there are ways to upgrade to Win 11 if your CPU is on the currently "unsupported" list. Of course, this is assuming that you wish to install Win 11......... (Duh, just noticed that your CPU is supported....)

thanks good buddy.......... i viewed this Youtube video (same Gigabyte motherboard here), rebooted, went into BIOS and followed the Youtube video. Looks like i might be able to switch the TPM to ENABLE ! if so, things are looking good .......

and also, from 6:40 on the timeline of this YouTube video ......... i have the same Gigabyte motherboard !

Hi JRT,

Please be careful....
You not only need to enable TPM, you also need to enable "Secure Boot".
For "Secure Boot" :-
1) Make sure your hard drive is GPT not MBR.
2) Make sure your firmware mode is set to UEFI not Legacy BIOS. (For 1 and 2 see https://www.windowscentral.com/how-conv ... windows-10)
3) Finally enable "Secure Boot". (To do this you need to disable CSM Support.)

Good luck. (I enabled TPM & "Secure Boot" on my computer, (Gigabyte motherboard), but I still intend to use Windows 10 for the foreseeable future.)

hi ilesquire,
did some google reading and watched more vids on Secure Boot setting ...................... i am STOPPING right there ! mine is MBR which needs to be converted to GPT (as you have also noted) and then enable Secure Boot ! i have a LEGACY BIOS ! even tho i have enabled TPM2.0 today, the rest is too risky for me to continue, so when the time comes, i'll take the PC to a Techie at a shop ........

thanks for your input :)

my TPM is swiched on today YAY !

The problem is that MS decided that only CPUs from 8th generation and newer can update to Windows 11. But there is a workaround. If you go to the page below and download either the Installation Assistant (first choice and the same as doing the update) or the media creation tool (second choice), you can install Windows 11. Doing that procedure Windows 11 bypasses the CPU check. That information is directly from MS. The ironic thing here is that MS wants you to have 8th gen or newer, but then tells you how to bypass that restriction. So what's the point?

FWIW, I could not for the life of me get Links 2003 to run on Windows 10 so I gave up. I built a budget system (Athlon 3000G with 16 GB of RAM and using the integrated Vega 3 graphics) and installed Windows 11. Then I installed Links 2003 and to my surprise it runs like a charm. No tweaks were needed and I am not sure if it is because Windows 11 plays nice with Links 2003 or that my system is pretty basic and it runs Links 2003 as if on an older system setup. In other words not a higher spec system.

Hi PureSlice.
I'm curious which motherboard and ram you went with, and how the PC runs with other things (including the APCD if you use it) as I was thinking of going a similar route.
Cheers

I just updated my dedicated Links computer to Windows 11 and it appears to be working fine. It's an Intel i5 10400.

On my work (ha ha) computer, for whatever reason, the Intel i7 6700 is not compatible with Windows 11

So go figure. I sort of wish I had Links on my non-compatible computer... but that's got all the safety software installed that may affect Links. I'm not about to try to switch the two.

Says my PC is too old and not compatible with W11. :D :D :D
