Random Pins ?

am just wondering ............ under 'View Courses and Conditions' what does 'RANDOM Pins' setting mean ?

does that mean my pin positions are DIFFERANT to someone else's playing in the same round same event ?

meaning, in round 1, i could have randomly set: 10 difficult positions, 5 medium and 3 easy ! whereas Joe Bloggs playing in the same round/same event has his/her pins set to: 5 difficult, 5 medium and 8 easy !

are we all playing the same pin positions in a particular round/event ?

Random simply means the pins are randomly selected from the Easy, Medium, and Hard settings. Everybody plays the same pins. (That has to be right, right?!)

You would be correct. The pins have been proven to be playable, based on input from several individuals over the years. The pins, however, may have been playable under CERTAIN conditions, but not ALL conditions.

When Mark sets up a tourney its similar to you starting a new game in links, if you open your links game, click play golf, click new round then it brings you to the conditions page. Click custom pins under the conditions and a new box opens that has a randomize button on the right. Click it a few times and watch the results. It simply gives Mark a means to set all 18 holes with 1 click of a button. Once ok is hit the positions are locked in for the round

does that mean my pin positions are DIFFERANT to someone else's playing in the same round same event ? NO

thoughts came into my head that where the pins are RANDOMLY set, then my game would pick pins "at random" and would/could be differant to Joe's RANDOM pin positions on his game on his computer for the same round same event.

but if we are all playing the same pin positions where the pins are set to RANDOM ......well, that's GOOD

thanks for your input there Mississippi :)

i comprehendo now........

i.e. its not the individual golfer's game on his/her computer which randomises the pins on tee off ! its when Mark (or whoever) "sets pins at random" on game set up !

Another question would be, does everyone get the same wind direction as everyone else? I see lots of times guys are making eagles on par 5's that I seem to not to be able to reach. Or they are using that Laser off snap 3 wood. I don't like to over swing on lets say the driver off the deck as I almost never hit the snap and there it goes miles off line.

How would your computer know what wind direction or what set of random pins anyone else got when they played? :?

That's an entirely different can of worms Jim, my bet would be that we do not all play the same wind. It would be easy to check tho with a little group participation. I find a punched 3 wood travels much further than a driver off the deck on a consistent basis.

I would add that (at least to me) it always says "random pins" on the LSPN website even if they are certain custom handpicked pins by the tour director. Wind direction will vary a bit depending on wind settings per course done by designer, but more often than not be at least nearly the same direction as most other players.

I don't think it's always the same wind for everybody but more likely than not it is from my experience. And I can only say that based on the fact that when I play a course it seems the wind is always basically the same each time which leads me to think that it's the same wind everyone else would get. I had a very rare exception a few weeks back playing Castle Pines when the wind was different to any round I have ever played there before. And that's after a lot of years playing Castle Pines.

And yes the off snap 3 wood could play a big part in making you think some have different wind directions. That shot is very useful not just to reach a green but to get close enough for a chip. I am not talking about getting close to a green but even maybe 40 and up to 50 yards where a chip in can happen.

I know for the courses I submit for PLSA, every pin is researched and submitted to Mark in a spreadsheet. I'm sure he's loyal in assigning what I send him.

Even if they're the same for everyone, I would NEVER recommend using random pin positions. There are way too many Classic and APCD courses out there with ridiculous pin positions... especially for those playing in Challenging mode.

I stopped playing PLSA for a good while because so many of the pins were completely unfair and that's why I asked Mark if I could help him on that tour. I've not had many complaints this season.
