On a July Afternoon .......

Postby JackRussellTerror on Thu Jul 18, 2019 3:59 pm

i think most of us in here are old F A R T S and remember what we were doing on that July afternoon of the moon landing 50 years ago !

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-1VtFKiBzo

at lunchtime at school in 5th Form (year 11 as a 17yo), about 8 of us snuck out the school gates and went up to 'Spider' Curtis's home just up the street from the school to watch the live landing on his tv. No one at home as both "Spider's" parents were at work. Spider turned on the tv and we watched it in awe, while devouring chocolate ice cream covered with malt, AND he had the Beatle's Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album playing ! And as Armstrong took that small step for man, another single - Back In The USSR - went down very well ......with the volume blowing the roof off the house

i'll never forget that afternoon. The 8 of us never went back to school for afternoon classes on that July afternoon HA :D

The 50th anniversary rolls around here Australian east coast time at precisely 12:56pm this coming sunday the 21st July ! what an achievement way back then !

Great memories, Rob. As a 14 year old (week and a half from 15), and it being summer here in the Northern parts, we were on vacation at my aunt and uncle's in Oxnard, CA. It also happened to be my dad's birthday. Us young ones were out in the yard playing on the slip and slide in the early evening, but we knew the landing was imminent, so we all headed in to watch it on the tube together. 50 years later, that vision is still clear in my mind.

FANTASTIC Rick, i loved reading your account of your special July afternoon with the family ! yes my vision of that day is also as clear as !

I like the lyrics at the end of that song. Food for thought ? ........
"And I wonder if a long time ago
Somewhere in the universe
They watched a man named Adam
Walk upon the earth"

I was 13 years old at the time. We watched it on TV down in Southern California.

I was only 3 1/2, but I swear I remember bits and pieces of it on TV, because the adults were making such a big deal over it and trying to pump up us kids. Of course, I really didn't understand the "gravity" of the situation.

I grew up in Oregon. We just happened to be visiting family in the Oxnard and Port Hueneme area during the landing.
