Questions on club selections

Postby RoyHiggi on Thu Apr 11, 2019 3:35 am

I guess we don't all have the same clubs in the bag but I am interested to know how you guys would play certain shots. Lets assume its a perfectly flat lie in the fairway and a perfectly flat green to go for and the conditions are m/m and the greens are not higher or lower than the fway. Challenging or non challenging?

1) what club do you hit for a 140 yard shot ?
2) for a 166 yard shot?
3) for a 183 yard shot
4) for a 98 yard shot?
5) for a 247 yard shot?
6) for a 45 yard shot?

and to what extent do you adjust the stance up or down?

Mc Mc - RTS

1) 140 - Full 8i @ 90%
2) 166 - Full 6i (90%)
3) 183 - 7W w/ 3 clicks loft (90%)
4) 98 - PW w/ 3 clicks loft (90%)
5) 247 - 3W w/ 2 clicks loft (90%)
6) 45 - LW w/ 4 clicks loft @ 70%

90% swing gives more consistently perfect club-ball contact

7 iron ? really ? playing challenging ? Count the ways you can cover the distance that useless club carries with other irons.... and add another rescue wood to your arsenal :?

This is a really good thread! It's interesting seeing the settings players are using for the shots. For me, the 7 iron is important. The useless club is the SW. At each loft setting the shot goes too far and the distance varies. I dropped it in favor of adding a 7 wood, and cover the SW distance gap with my de-lofted LW. In the 185 to 200 yard range I have a 5 iron, 7 wood and 3 iron to deal with a shot's required carry and roll.

I guess I am a bit of a mix of others. I am intrugued though at the many mention of hitting 12 o'clock and wonder if you guys really try hard to hit 12 or is that just deemed to be the preferred? I tend to always think of going a touch past, 1 or 2 and if it hits 12 spot on then ok. And some say hitting just before 12 on occasion which for me is a very hard shot to play.

Here's mine for those distances:
140 9 iron 2 down on challenging. maybe the same on non but a fraction harder.

166 7 iron 2 down. Maybe only 1 down on challenging. How dare I use a 7 iron i hear? I just can't imagine punching a 9 iron that far but I guess it's what you feel comfortable with.

183 6 iron 3 down. I gave up a 5 iron many moons ago and the 6 seems to work well for me.

98 not easy for me. depends how I am playing. Maybe a lw 3 down or a SW 1 up and hit just before 12.

247 another tricky one as they all are in between clubs. I think I would favour a 4W 3 down ( set at 240) rather than a 3W as I do struggle with hitting just short of 12 which it would need to be a for a 3W set at 260. Setting it at 250 might be good!

45 if nothing is in the way I would use a PW chip 9 down from the top! Basically anything up to 50 yardsish I look to chip in. If I am playing elite I would prefer 100 yards to say 53 yards so I can hit a full swing.

My time playing RTS was limited but I am not sure I fully understand "full swing ' 90%"!

For Pstroke does high 80's low 90's really mean 90 is ideal ?

No doubt most of the distance control is about adjusting the stance with some shots needing a bit more or less power at the top. If I can't chip the ball to the hole I am desperate not to get too close as I am terrible at 3/4 or 2/3 LW shots. Can't be avoided at times ( bunkers in the way!) so I am guessing and praying but for some reason I miss the 6 snap badly on that type of shot.

Heh, 7 iron is my favorite club irl. And since this is supposed to be a golf simulation... :)

It would be, but there always SOME variation. Depending on the club, it can be as low as 85 or, especially with the 4i, nearer to 100!!

I also tend to hit a lot of my shots forward in the stance as it often seems to go straighter
